Crib Wall Failure Investigation and Keystone Remediation

Discipline

CUSTOMER

Sydney West, NSW

Location

Challenge

An existing crib wall in Sydney's west had failed twice, with the second event collapsing a roughly 15 m section of wall. A permanent remediation was needed to restore the embankment.

Solution

Our investigation found the wall was under-designed, made worse by trapped groundwater. We designed a replacement: a 6 m Keystone wall with 13 geogrid layers and new subsurface drainage to remove the water pressure for good.

Key Highlights

  • Investigation found the original wall under-designed, worsened by groundwater pressure
  • New 6 m Keystone wall with 13 layers of geogrid reinforcement
  • Verified stable under static and seismic loading, FOS up to 1.67
  • New subsurface drainage system permanently removes the groundwater pressure
